As the foundation of architecture and building planning, technical drawing holds a special significance for humans. It is ubiquitous as the basis for meaningful designs and precise planning, since the planning phase is the origin of industrial and technical building development. As humanmade creations whose characteristics are shaped by the dominance of drawn lines, technical drawings accompany us in our everyday experiences in a direct but at the same time indirect way: a great responsibility that only a sophisticated writing instrument could do justice to.

A special thank you to Edouard Fabre, the artist of the picture!

We also had some questions about the importance of pencils for Edouards work, thank you for your answers @fabreed

  1. How’d you rate the importance of a good quality pencil in technical drawings?
It is essentially that the tool used is capable of correctly linking our ideas and their materialization. The technical drawing requires great finesse and precision, so it is essential to have high-quality pencils capable of meeting these requirements.
  2. What makes a pencil precise enough for detailed drawings?
In my opinion it is important to be able to play on the type of lead you put in your pencil so that you can adapt your line to the desired objective.
  3. Do you prefer heavier pencils, such as the Otto Hutt designs 01,02,03,04 or pencils with a wooden mantel?
I like the contact with steel pencils, which are heavier than wooden ones because they give the feeling of having an exceptional object, synonymous with quality, precision and performance, between my fingers.
  4. Is there any material or design that makes a pencil especially easy to handle?
I think that a simple and refined design is necessary for an instinctive handling of the object.
  5. What is your experience with Otto Hutt pencils?
My Otto Hutt pencils accompany me throughout my creative process, from the sketch to the finalization of an illustration. For me, they are essential tools that allow me to bring my creativity to life. As such, they are the best companions on my travels, by train, plane or even on foot.
