Long durability and flawless functionality: the art of fountain pen care

In a world where speed and efficiency are the norm, we can sometimes overlook the beauty and elegance of a handwritten letter or note. However, quality writing instruments make the world stand still and bring us to enjoy the sophistication of handwriting and craftsmanship. An exquisite fountain pen is not just a tool, but an extension of ourselves, a source of inspiration and a statement of style. But how do we keep these unique pieces in their original glory?

To preserve the long life and first-class functionality of a high-quality writing instrument, special care and attention are required to ensure that it always remains in the same condition as on the first day.

The answer lies in the care and attention we give to our nib, the heart of every fountain pen. The ink flows smoothly between the nib and the ink feeder, expressing what has been written. But over time, the space between can become clogged and make it difficult to write smoothly. What should be done to keep the writing quality of the fountain pen in perfect condition?

Cleaning the nib: step by step

One of the most important ways to keep your fountain pen in flawless condition is to clean the nib regularly. Here are some steps to help you do that:

For cartridge fountain pens:

  1. Gently dip the nib in lukewarm water several times to remove dried ink.
  2. Let the nib dry thoroughly.
  3. Then reinsert the nib and enjoy the ease of writing.

For fountain pen with converter:

  1. Insert the nib in lukewarm water.
  2. Fill the converter with water and empty it several times until the leaking water is completely clear.
  3. Dry the fountain pen completely and use it again as usual.

This will remove any traces of ink that may have remained in the nib. This cleaning method is also particularly useful if you want to change the ink color. It is simple, time-saving and allows you to use the same writing instrument with different ink colors.

Magic of inks with fragrances

Another way to deepen the joy of writing is to choose an ink that appeals to your senses. With a wide range of scents and colors in inks, Otto Hutt takes you on an inspiring sensory journey. From subtle nuances to vibrant tones accompanied by fascinating scents, you’ll find the perfect ink for every occasion and mood.

Note: The use of particularly highly pigmented inks increases the risk of drying out (for example, gold inks, metallic inks, extra black).  Therefore, regular cleaning is even more important to preserve the quality of your writing instruments.
